Lake Akan Ice Dome in Japan

By Pacific Domes

Here’s a very unique dome idea sent to us by our associates in Japan, a company called Prism. A 24 ft. geodesic dome frame was used to create this icy structure.

It was covered with some type of mesh fabric and then sprayed with water. The water adhered to the mesh and then froze in the cold outdoor environment, creating an icy cover much like an igloo.

The ice dome was lit up at night and even had images projected onto it. The effect was truly dazzling!

The 24 ft. ice dome was one of the displays featured at this year’s Lake Akan Ice Festival in Hokkaido, Japan.

The festival, which takes place from late January through late March, is a popular event that mixes winter art, beauty and fun! It incorporates snowmen, igloos and snow and ice sculptures with fireworks and lightshows.
